Lovokomio of Chios Island is the longest-lived Leprosy Hospital in Greece with a continuous presence of about 6 centuries, dedicated to the treatment of leprosy patients.
The Genoese founded the Lobokomio in Chios probably in 1378, in order to limit the spread of leprosy which harmed their commercial and financial interests. The spread of the disease on the island is known from the 10th century due to its central position in the sea communication routes in the Aegean region. It operated until 1959.
Το Λωβοκομείο Χίου είναι το μακροβιότερο Λεπροκομείο στην Ελλάδα με συνεχή παρουσία 6 περίπου αιώνων, αφιερωμένο στη θεραπεία λεπρών ασθενών. Οι Γενουάτες ίδρυσαν το Λωβοκομείο στη Χίο πιθανότατα το 1378, προκειμένου να περιορίσουν τη διάδοση της λέπρας που έβλαπτε τα εμπορικά και οικονομικά τους συμφέροντα. Η εξάπλωση της νόσου στο νησί είναι γνωστή από τον 10ο αιώνα λόγω της κεντρικής του θέσης στις θαλάσσιες οδούς επικοινωνίας στην περιοχή του Αιγαίου. Λειτούργησε μέχρι το 1959.
